Rotomold Tool Repair

Landscape Structures•Delano, MN

About The Position

The Rotomold Tool Repair Technician is responsible for maintaining and repairing molds used in rotational molding operations through welding, grinding, machining, and precision measurement. This role ensures molds remain in good condition to support the production of quality parts, minimize downtime, and keep manufacturing operations running efficiently. The position also supports continuous improvement initiatives, troubleshoots recurring tooling issues, and, at more advanced levels, performs complex repairs while assisting in the development of less experienced technicians.

Requirements

  • One-year certificate from a college or technical school.
  • 3+ years of related mold-repair, tool-repair, or machining experience.
  • 2+ years welding steel and aluminum using MIG and TIG.
  • 2+ years of grinding experience and reading blueprints.
  • 2+ years using precision measurement equipment.
  • Able to use oxy-acetylene torch and sandblasting equipment.
  • Able to read and comprehend blueprints, written instructions, and schedules.
  • Able to work several repair methods with minimal direction and sound judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Make minor repairs and modifications to rotomold tooling so molds return to service in spec.
  • Weld mold defects using MIG and TIG on steel and aluminum, then grind and finish the repair to the original cavity profile.
  • Use precision measurement equipment - calipers, micrometers, depth and surface gauges - to verify dimensions and surface finish after a repair.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and written instructions to scope each repair against the mold record.
  • Proactively improve molds to head off quality and productivity problems and to reduce future maintenance needs.
  • Maintain tool-maintenance supplies - weld filler, abrasives, release agents, gasket and fastener stock - and request resupply when low.
  • Assist with process-improvement projects in the Rotomold area as assigned.
  • Support production across the area when needed and operate equipment safely at all times.
  • Inspect mold tooling at the repair bench and confirm the repair scope against the mold log and the request from production or the workflow coordinator.
  • Work with little direction; take on the harder repairs and recurring problem molds, and choose the right method and sequence to bring each tool back to spec.
  • Clean, polish, and buff mold cavity surfaces; remove resin buildup and residue from earlier runs.
  • Replace mold gaskets, fasteners, vents, and inserts; verify torque, alignment, and fit before the mold returns to service.
  • Coordinate with engineering on design changes that need ECR / ECO approval, document mold history in the mold log, and help newer repair techs learn welding, grinding, machining, and standard work.
