About The Position

The ROTC Instructor is responsible for planning, teaching, and evaluating instruction in JROTC subjects. This role involves providing educational opportunities and extracurricular activities for students, including character education and service learning. The instructor will teach, advise, and coach JROTC cadets to help them reach their full potential and maintain a viable JROTC program with a minimum enrollment of 100 students.

Requirements

  • Retired Commissioned Officer, Warrant Officer, or Non-Commissioned Officer as required by the vacant position.
  • Certified as a JROTC instructor by appropriate military service.
  • Baccalaureate degree (for Commissioned or Warrant Officers) or Associates degree (for Non-Commissioned Officers).
  • Must maintain a valid Kansas Driver's License throughout employment.
  • Proficiency in military staff and leadership procedures.
  • Ability to organize and work independently.
  • Must possess a commitment to the success of and care for students, and have the ability to actively involve students in learning.
  • Ability to perform a variety of tasks, perform under deadlines, and work in a calm and efficient manner.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and written in order to communicate with others inside and outside of the organization for the purpose of giving and obtaining information.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a Supervisor when their discretion is needed.
  • Ability to perform as an effective team player within the school and the district Leadership program.
  • Ability to plan, organize, make decisions and prioritize work to meet the daily demands of the building.

Responsibilities

  • Administer the high school JROTC program in accordance with applicable military service regulations and district policies.
  • Administer a multi-subject four-year JROTC curriculum, including planning, organizing, and instructing JROTC education classes.
  • Organize a curriculum model to complement the school curriculum.
  • Develop annual, weekly, and daily training schedules for curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular instruction, training, and activities.
  • Develop course syllabi for four distinct JROTC courses.
  • Write/update daily lesson plans.
  • Participate in courses of instruction or district in-service training designed to improve instructional methods.
  • Teach four separate levels of JROTC courses.
  • Evaluate student performance and maintain grades.
  • Perform all other requirements routinely performed by classroom teachers.
  • Maintain military and school property as directed by the applicable military service directorate and district.
  • Manage and supervise all logistical areas such as requisitioning of government furnished supplies, equipment, uniforms, textbooks, and training aids.
  • Maintain training aids, curriculum, devices, equipment, and uniforms valued at $90,000+.
  • Maintain accountability and serviceability of all issued property, including 100% annual inventories.
  • Coordinate with school personnel to ensure the proper accountability of school activity funds and property.
  • Maintain accountability of service and school funds averaging $15,000 annually.
  • Promote the growth of the program by establishing rapport and working with high school and middle school counselors and faculty members.
  • Establish contact with civic groups to obtain their recognition and support of the JROTC program.
  • Maintain a cooperative relationship with parents/guardians.
  • Counsel students about the benefits of JROTC with the aim to enroll and keep students in the program.
  • Inform JROTC cadets, parents, and students at large about military-related scholarship opportunities.
  • Assist students with applications and filing.
  • Plan and conduct co-curricular and extracurricular activities, including Color guards, drill teams, orienteering teams, raider challenge teams, and participation in field trips and competitive events.
  • Supervise JROTC cadets at leadership camps, orientation trips, adventure training, fund raising, and other extra-curricular activities.
  • Participate in district events such as Wichita City League Drill Competition, Veterans Day Ceremony, National Awards Ceremony, Monthly JROTC Instructors Meetings, and Honorary Cadet Selection Program.
  • Complete annual Continuous Growth Plan in accordance with the district Staff Quality Improvement System.
  • Plan, organize, and direct JROTC unit organization.
  • Maintain liaison with the appropriate service branch by attending conferences and workshops when requested.
  • Keep current on changes and developments within the service branch, including logistics, finances, and academic areas.
  • Attend monthly district JROTC meetings.
  • Meet deadlines and submit required military service and district reports.
  • Accept assignments related to JROTC as requested by the building principal and the district JROTC Director.
  • Assist with additional duties as assigned by the building principal or JROTC Director.
