About The Position

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) Delivery and Operations Division in Roseburg is seeking litter patrol workers for its Youth Litter Patrol (YLP) Program. Founded in 1977, the program aims to clean up state highway rights-of-way. Litter crews consist of crew members and crew leaders who primarily pick up litter along state highways, with potential for other assigned tasks. This role offers an opportunity to work outdoors in a team environment, contribute to maintaining state highways, support environmental efforts, and learn about career paths at ODOT. Applications are welcomed from individuals 16 years of age or older for crew member positions and 18 years of age or older for crew leader positions. This is a temporary position and does not include the typical benefits of permanent employees, though temporary employees may be eligible for health benefits through the Public Employees Benefit Board (PEBB) as outlined by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Requirements

  • At least 16 years old on the first day of assignment (Crew Member).
  • At least 18 years old on the first day of assignment (Crew Leader).
  • Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to work in all types of weather and around traffic.
  • Ability to speak and write in English.
  • Ability to lift and carry filled litter bags.
  • Must be able to work in the US (I-9 form required).

Nice To Haves

  • Current State of Oregon employee (must apply through Workday profile).
  • Veteran or Oregon National Guard servicemember (may receive preference).

Responsibilities

  • Pick up and bag litter along state highways.
  • Lift and carry filled litter bags.
  • Speak and write in English to communicate about assigned tasks and potential roadside hazards.
  • Follow ODOT safety procedures.
  • Work in all types of weather and around traffic.
  • Oversee work (Crew Leader).
  • Transport crew members from the ODOT office to the work site using a state vehicle (Crew Leader).
  • Complete payroll forms for the crew (Crew Leader).
