About The Position

The Roll Turner is a machinist and is responsible for machining, maintaining, inspecting, and refurbishing rolling mill rolls to precise dimensional and surface finish requirements. This position operates CNC lathes, to turn, groove, and repair rolls used throughout the rolling process. The Roll Turner plays a critical role in ensuring roll quality, product quality, mill efficiency, and operational reliability while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Success in this role is measured by promoting a safe work environment maintaining roll quality, achieving dimensional accuracy, supporting mill productivity, and actively contributing to continuous improvement efforts.

Requirements

  • Ability to lift 50lbs on a regular basis.
  • Ability to work in a safety conscious industrial environment including use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
  • Be exposed to extreme temperatures, electrical hazards, confined spaces, heights, noise, vibration, dust, vapors, fumes, irritants and moving mechanical parts.
  • Must be able to perform the physical task of the job assigned; to include climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and crouching
  • Ability to stand for duration of shift, up to 12 hours; frequent walking or climbing stairs
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and technical specifications
  • Strong mathematical and measurement skills
  • Knowledge of machining practices, cutting tools, feeds, speeds, and surface finishes
  • Ability to safely operate overhead cranes and material handling equipment
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement
  • Proficient in precision measurement techniques
  • Understanding of rolling mill roll maintenance and pass design concepts
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to maintain tight dimensional tolerances

Nice To Haves

  • Previous machining, roll turning, lathe operation, or steel mill experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate large, cranes, and other machine shop equipment to machine rolling mill rolls
  • Turn, groove, contour, and finish rolls to specified dimensions, profiles, and surface finish requirements
  • Measure roll diameters, groove dimensions, and critical tolerances using micrometers, pi tapes, calipers, dial indicators, and depth gauges
  • Interpret roll drawings, pass designs, blueprints, and work instructions
  • Inspect rolls for wear, cracks, surface defects, and dimensional accuracy
  • Maintain required roll diameter tolerances and ensure consistency between roll sets
  • Perform setup, alignment, and tooling changes on lathes and machining equipment
  • Record roll measurements and maintain accurate machining and inspection records
  • Assist with roll inventory management and identification
  • Troubleshoot machining issues and recommend corrective actions
  • Maintain housekeeping standards and communicate effectively with rolling mill personnel
