Robotics Mechanical Engineer

Teledyne Technologies•Billerica, MA

About The Position

Teledyne FLIR Defense is seeking a self-motivated Mechanical Engineer to help create robotic systems for military, law enforcement, and first-responder missions. The role is responsible for mechanical architecture of parts and assemblies used in robotics applications and contributes to developing electromechanical products for the unmanned defense and security marketplace. The engineer supports design teams developing and manufacturing robotic systems, completing mechanical layouts and detailed part designs using 3D CAD. The position also develops product-system test methods, sets up and conducts prototype and product testing, analyzes results, and documents them. Analytical tools are used to select architectures and verify subsystem design intent, and the engineer supports root-cause analysis and resolution of design and development issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience developing electromechanical systems.
  • Experience with a 3D CAD package.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects and meet aggressive goals.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including preparation of specifications, test plans, reports, and white papers.
  • Experience with thermal design and analysis.
  • Knowledge of injection molding, CNC-machined parts, and sheet-metal part design.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, legal permanent resident, asylee, or refugee, or be eligible to apply for and obtain the appropriate U.S. Department of State or Commerce export-control license.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Technical experience in a robotics-related field.
  • Proficiency with Creo Parametric 3D CAD software.
  • Experience with analysis software.
  • Knowledge of injection molding, CNC-machined parts, and sheet-metal part design.
  • Experience designing and developing rugged, reliable systems for military applications.
  • Knowledge of ASME drafting standards, dimensional management methods, and the ASME Y14.5-2009 GD&T standard.
  • Familiarity with rapid prototyping methods.
  • Experience with Product Lifecycle Management tools, such as PTC Windchill 10.1 or newer.
  • Small mechanism design experience, especially gears, bearings, wheels, and linkages.
  • Knowledge of kinematics and dynamics analysis methods.
  • Structural design, stress, and fatigue analysis experience with Creo Simulate or ANSYS.

Responsibilities

  • Apply mechanical-systems knowledge to the analysis, development, design, integration, testing, and production of unmanned ground systems.
  • Investigate and resolve mechanical issues in company systems.
  • Apply formal mechanical engineering best practices and processes.
  • Support continuous improvement of existing products.
  • Specify materials that are chemically compatible with the applicable environment.
  • Research new technologies to solve unique engineering problems.
  • Work with cross-functional electrical, software, systems, manufacturing, and operations teams.
  • Create mechanical layouts and detailed part designs using 3D CAD.
  • Develop product-system test methods; set up and conduct tests, analyze results, and document findings.
  • Use analytical tools to select optimal architectures and verify that subsystems meet design intent.
  • Support methodical root-cause analysis and rapid resolution of design and development issues.
