Robot Operations Manager PM

1XSan Carlos, CA
$145,000 - $175,000Onsite

About The Position

1X is building humanoid robots for home use, aiming to automate chores and give people back their time. This involves solving complex challenges in robotics, AI, and manufacturing simultaneously, at scale, and in a safe, family-friendly form factor. The company has been developing these robots since 2014 and is now scaling up for production and deployment. NEO is their flagship home robot designed for real-world operation alongside people. The company is looking for individuals inspired by this mission who want to see their work have a tangible impact on the world, changing how humans spend their time by creating abundance safely. The Maintenance & Repair Operations team is crucial for ensuring the reliability of robotic systems as they transition from prototype development to higher-volume deployment. This team operates at the intersection of engineering, manufacturing, quality, and field operations, facilitating a feedback loop between hardware performance and product improvement. Their work directly contributes to enhancing robot reliability, operational readiness, and scalability throughout the system's lifecycle.

Requirements

  • 4–6+ years of experience in electromechanical repair, maintenance, sustaining engineering, or related technical operations environments.
  • Proven experience leading technical teams in manufacturing, robotics, automotive, aerospace, or other high-reliability industries.
  • Strong experience troubleshooting and repairing complex hardware systems.
  • Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous, rapidly evolving startup environments.
  • Strong hands-on troubleshooting capability across complex electromechanical systems.
  • Ability to lead technical teams in fast-paced, high-growth operational environments.
  • Deep operational instincts with experience building scalable repair or maintenance workflows.
  • Excellent root cause analysis and structured problem-solving skills.
  • Comfortable operating both strategically and tactically — from process development to hands-on repair work on the floor.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting robotics, autonomous systems, EV platforms, or aviation systems.
  • Background in depot operations or medium-to-high volume repair environments.
  • Familiarity with reliability engineering concepts, failure analysis, and structured root cause methodologies.
  • Experience working within traceability-driven or safety-critical operational environments.
  • Exposure to scaling repair or refurbishment operations from prototype to production volume.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the PM shift of the internal Maintenance & Repair Operations organization.
  • Own the execution and scaling of repair operations for complex electromechanical robotic systems, including intake, diagnostics, repair, validation, and return-to-service.
  • Ensure system reliability, operational throughput, and rapid feedback into engineering as 1X scales humanoid robot production and deployment.
  • Operate as a hands-on technical leader and operational builder.
  • Develop the processes, standards, and team needed to support a rapidly growing robotics operation.
  • Build and lead a high-performing PM shift repair and maintenance operation supporting robotic system reliability at scale.
  • Establish scalable workflows for diagnostics, repair, validation, failure tracking, and return-to-service processes.
  • Drive measurable improvements in repair turnaround time, repeat failure reduction, and operational throughput.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to improve product reliability and serviceability.
  • Develop and mentor a growing team of repair technicians and diagnostic/service engineers across both hourly and salaried functions.
