About The Position

The Roaster Trainee is a full-time, non-exempt position based at Peet's Roasting Plant. This role supports daily roasting operations while completing a structured certification program. The trainee will develop the knowledge and skills needed to operate commercial coffee roasting equipment safely and efficiently, learning the roasting process from green coffee through finished product. Through hands-on training, they will gain experience with roasting equipment, roast profiles, production systems, quality standards, and food safety practices while contributing to daily manufacturing operations. The schedule for this position is 1st shift from 12:00 am to 8:30 am.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED equivalent
Minimum 1 year of experience working in an industrial production facility
Capable of reading and understanding production documents and safety manuals
Basic math, reading, and writing skills
Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office)
Positive attitude and willingness to work as part of a team
Ability to work independently and collaborate in a team environment, manage and follow through multi-step project steps/procedures consistently.
Perform work in a timely and professional manner.
Ability to multitask.
Highly motivated, self-directed, and results-driven.
Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.

Previous experience in a warehouse or food manufacturing environment

Responsibilities

Learn basic operations of the GHS (Green Handling System) system and Microsoft Dynamics D365 Warehouse Management System.
Complete a forklift certification.
Learn basic ICO marks, internal reference codes, bag weights and Peet’s blends.
Become proficient as a sensory panelist, participate in daily production cupping and sensory tests.
Learn the functionality of Peet’s roasting equipment, understand general maintenance and acquire the skills to roast independently.
Learn the theory of roasting and apply it to daily roasts.
Learn Peet’s quality and food safety control system.
Manage inventory with mobile device.
Other responsibilities as assigned by the manager of roasting.
Roast batches consistently meeting documented quality standards over a period of 12 months.
Continually roast high demand full batch size coffees as part of the certification process to achieve the status of a full Level 1 Roaster.
Successfully pass a written and oral examination given onsite to achieve Level 1 Roaster status within 12 months.
