About The Position

As GFT continues to grow and expand, we are seeking an emerging Roadway Project Engineer to support our Transportation Group in Metro Nashville, TN. This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring a minimum of 3 days of onsite office attendance. Working on the roadway team at GFT offers the opportunity to engage in transformative projects that enhance transportation infrastructure and improve community connectivity. As a Roadway Project Engineer, you will play a key role in the design and development of roadway and highway projects across Tennessee and the Southeast. You’ll support project delivery for state, municipal, and private clients while working under the guidance of senior engineers and project managers. In this role, you’ll take ownership of design tasks, prepare plans and technical documentation, and support project management activities to meet our high standards for delivering projects on time, within scope, and in alignment with established quality expectations. You’ll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, mentor junior staff, and continue developing your technical expertise and client-facing skills within the transportation infrastructure sector.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Tennessee, or the ability to obtain a license within 3 months; additional state licensure is a plus.
  • 8-10 years of progressive engineering experience with broad knowledge of transportation design and strong technical skills in highway design.
  • Prior experience with Tennessee Department of Transportation projects preferred, including well versed in client design policies, standards, and specifications.
  • Proficient in MicroStation, OpenRoads, and Microsoft Office products.
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, self-starter, demonstrated organization skills, team player, and willingness to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Performing engineering design tasks for roadway projects from concept development to final design, including construction support.
  • Developing plans, specifications, cost estimates, reports, and prepare final bid packages
  • Establishing working relationships and contact with client technical staff and project managers.
  • Assisting in the recruitment of junior engineers.
  • Managing and mentoring junior engineers on project assignments.
  • Attending internal and external meetings with the team.
  • Coordinating design activities and meetings between design staff, subconsultants, and client managers.
  • Coordinating the planning, staffing, scheduling, budget management, quality control, of subconsultants and internal technical and support staff.
  • Participating in project decisions regarding technical approaches, cost and scheduling performance
  • Leading projects and completing tasks within schedule and budget with teams comprised of different disciplines.
  • Performing project QA/QC.
  • Assisting project managers with various other tasks.
  • Multi-tasking and managing workload on various projects simultaneously.
  • Undertaking tasks efficiently and independently.
  • Participate in the development of proposals as part of a pursuit team.
  • Support GFT efforts to grow our Transportation Practice in Tennessee.
