We are looking for a dedicated Roadway Maintenance Leader I / Licensed Crew Leader to join our Parks and Roads Services branch. This role is at the heart of our outdoor infrastructure, ensuring that parks furniture and structures are safe, high-quality, and ready for everyone to enjoy. As a Licensed Crew Leader, you will lead dynamic teams in the repair, conservation, and construction of parks projects, with a primary focus on playground development and redevelopment. Your role shifts with the seasons, transitioning from playground construction in the summer to essential snow and ice control in the winter months. You’ll be right there in the field, providing hands-on supervision, technical training, and safety oversight for your crew. Beyond the physical work, you serve as a key administrative link, managing timesheets, project documentation, and material tracking to keep operations running smoothly. You will also act as a primary point of contact for external vendors and internal departments, ensuring project goals are met efficiently. Ultimately, your expertise ensures our recreational spaces meet the highest safety standards to protect the people who use them.

Requirements

  • Two (2) year diploma program in a related field. Other completed educational equivalencies may be considered
  • A minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in parks construction, Landscaping and Snow and Ice (SNIC), including operation of all vehicles and associated equipment is required or equivalent
  • Ability to lead, develop, and motivate effective work crews in a fast-paced environment
  • Extensive knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools used in parks maintenance and construction
  • Extensive knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in parks and playground construction
  • Previous experience in a supervisory or lead hand capacity within a municipal or construction environment
  • Maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with community members and internal collaborators
  • Ability to implement annual work plans
  • Setting priorities and scheduling resources to meet seasonal objectives
  • Inspect completed work and ensure site evaluations meet standards
  • Knowledge of City and Department policies and relevant legislation
  • Monitoring OH&S compliance and following corporate safety practice
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the City of Edmonton Design and Construction Guidelines
  • Proven problem-solving abilities and the capacity to make independent decisions under tight deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills for interacting with the public, civic departments, and outside organizations
  • Experience using Google Suite (Docs, Sheets) and SAP for administrative tasks

  • Hire is dependent on obtaining and maintaining a Valid Class 3 Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement or higher (or provincial equivalent), and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) or higher. Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls
  • Possession of current Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a Canadian Playground Safety Institute (CPSI) certification, or the ability to obtain it within 12 months of employment

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct leadership and field-level supervision to crews, including performing employee evaluations and monitoring attendance and performance
  • Lead the repair, conservation, and construction of playground projects according to CSA and City of Edmonton standards
  • Coordinate winter operations as a working foreman, engaging in manual labour and equipment operation for snow and ice programs
  • Conduct safety training, "toolbox talks," and ensure all corporate safety practices and OH&S regulations are strictly followed
  • Manage administrative tasks such as preparing work plans, tracking inventory, and submitting weekly timesheets for crew members
  • Communicate effectively with community members to provide information on work programs and address localized concerns
  • Liaise with external supply vendors, utility companies, and internal collaborators to ensure project success
