About The Position

The Nebraska Department of Transportation Lighting & ITS Unit is seeking a Highway Designer to join our team of designers and engineers. In this role, you will work with a team to design and deliver plans to construct safe, efficient, and effective lighting and Intelligent Transportation Systems on Nebraska highways. If unable to fill the Highway Designer III level, will consider applicants at the Highway Designer II level.

Requirements

  • Highway Designer III: Three years of experience in highway civil engineering design, including CADD applications and practices OR post high school coursework or training in the design field mentioned above may substitute for two of the three years of experience required on a year-for-year basis.
  • Highway Designer II: Coursework, training, or experience in design, drafting, engineering, highway construction, or other construction field using CADD applications and practices.
  • Valid driver's license or ability to provide independent authorized transportation.
  • Ability to attend Plan-In-Hand visits to the field.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Knowledge of Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) Roadway Design Standards, AASHTO Roadway Design Standards; Nebraska Standard Specifications for Highway Construction; hydraulics and hydrology, advanced engineering principles related to design and construction of projects including engineering, surveying, hydrology, hydraulics and geometrics.

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience with Open Roads Designer, MicroStation, GeoPak, or other civil engineering design software.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Lighting & ITS Unit's mission to deliver lighting and ITS plans.
  • Design lighting layouts for a wide variety of NDOT project types: roadway lighting, bridges, rest areas, weigh stations, etc.in coordination with the Lighting Design Engineer.
  • Design ITS systems in coordination with the TSMO and ITS Design Engineers.
  • Prepare lighting computations and calculations.
  • Tabulate quantities of construction materials required for each project.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
