The Roadway Engineer (PE) will be responsible for the design, review, verification, and delivery of roadway and highway infrastructure projects, both urban and rural, ensuring compliance with all applicable standards. This role involves technical leadership throughout project lifecycles, from conceptual planning to final design and construction support. The Roadway Engineer may act as the Engineer of Record, applying professional judgment to ensure designs are safe, constructible, cost-effective, and meet client requirements. Key responsibilities include coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, designing roadway geometry, typical sections, quantities, and technical documentation, and supporting quality control. The position requires collaboration with internal international production centers, design partners, clients, contractors, and approving authorities, playing a vital role in delivering complex transportation projects on time and to high quality standards. This role is an employee of ADENA, a subsidiary of ACCIONA Engineering.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (BSc/BEng)
  • Minimum 5 years of roadway/highway design experience, preferably on DOT or design-build transportation projects.
  • Demonstrated experience serving in signing/sealing roadway plans.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license (preferably in GA, NC, TN and LA) with ability to obtain licensure through reciprocity in other states within a defined timeframe.
  • Demonstrable relevant project experience equivalent to a high level of qualification for Roadways Area Classes/Company Classifications in DOT agencies, specifically in GDOT’s 3.01 to 3.05 Area Classes.
  • Strong working knowledge of AASHTO Green Book, GDOT Design Policy Manual, MUTCD, and applicable FHWA standards.
  • Experience coordinating with state DOTs and federal transportation agencies.
  • Experience engaging directly with contractors as clients.
  • Proficiency in roadway design software such as OpenRoads Designer, InRoads, Civil 3D, or equivalent.
  • Must have worked on Multi-Lane Urban Roadway Widening or Reconstruction Design in heavily developed commercial, industrial or residential area or Multi-lane Rural Interstate Highway Design or Multi-lane Urban Interstate Highway Design
  • Strong understanding of roadway quantities, pay items, and cost control.
  • Familiarity with contract documents, special provisions, and non-standard special provisions.
  • Ability to perform technical reviews under compressed schedules.
  • Capable of undertaking out-of-state trips or longer stays at client’s offices or as required in upcoming project assignments, within the U.S.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other technical teams and production centers abroad in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Collaborative mindset with a focus on safety, quality, and compliance.

  • Experience in design-build or PPP project environments preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Roadway geometric design, including horizontal and vertical alignments, typical sections, corridors, and profiles.
  • Prepare roadway plans, specifications, technical memoranda, and quantity calculations.
  • Review tasks completed by other team members and/or internal production centers.
  • Ensure compliance with AASHTO, state DOTs, FHWA, MUTCD, and other applicable federal, state, and local design standards.
  • Coordinate roadway design with structures, drainage, utilities, traffic, ITS, and construction staging disciplines.
  • Signing and sealing roadway plans.
  • Review and/or design verification of submittals, shop drawings, design changes, and construction RFIs related to roadway elements.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record for roadway design packages, signing and sealing plans in accordance with professional licensure requirements.
  • Support design development across all project phases, including conceptual studies, preliminary engineering, IFR/IFC design, and as-built documentation.
  • Participate in technical meetings with internal international production centers, design partners, clients, DOTs, and approving authorities.
  • Assist with constructability reviews, value engineering efforts, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Provide responses to client RFIs.
  • Support proposal development, including technical approaches, design narratives, and fee estimates.
  • Perform site visits as required to support construction activities and resolve field issues.
  • Undertake out-of-state trips or longer stays at client’s offices or as required for project assignments within the U.S.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned to support project and business needs.
  • Work in close coordination with ACCIONA Engineering back office in Spain.
