About The Position

TransitAmerica Services, Inc. is currently seeking a Road Foreman of Engines in San Jose, CA. The Road Foreman of Engines manages locomotive engineers and conductors, supervise train service crews to ensure the safe and efficient operations of locomotives and trains in specific areas. The pay range for this position is $131,750-155,000 annually.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be a certified locomotive engineer under 49 CFR Part 240 or have equivalent certified locomotive engineer experience with a Class I railroad.
  • Minimum of 4 years of railroad operating experience as a train service engineer and/or Road Foreman of Engines.
  • No violations described under 49 CFR Part 240.117.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of 49 CFR requirements, railroad operating rules, train handling, air brake rules, and field operations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable Federal Railroad Administration regulations.
  • Must satisfy qualification requirements as DSLE within 6 months of becoming road foreman.
  • Must possess demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience, supported by a record of satisfactory job performance.
  • Demonstrate general knowledge of locomotives, passenger equipment, and rolling stock.
  • Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and endorsements as required per position.
  • Pass pre-employment DOT physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position.
  • This position requires you to pass and maintain a DOT medical evaluation to drive a Herzog commercial vehicle.
  • Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, oversight, and support for train service employees to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operations.
  • Monitor daily train operations, respond to service disruptions and incidents, and drive improvements in safety, service delivery, and on-time performance.
  • Coordinate with internal departments, host railroads, carriers, and agency partners to support operational effectiveness and resolve service concerns.
  • Investigate incidents, service delays, rule violations, and employee performance issues, recommending corrective actions as needed.
  • Lead and support the training, qualification, certification, and professional development of conductors, assistant conductors, and locomotive engineers.
  • Evaluate employee performance, provide coaching and mentoring, identify training gaps, and ensure compliance with operating rules, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on operating rules, train handling practices, special instructions, and applicable Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.
  • Conduct operational testing, ride evaluations, compliance audits, and efficiency checks to promote safe work practices and consistent rule adherence.
  • Manage locomotive engineer certification and recertification programs, maintain required documentation, and ensure compliance with FRA Parts 240 and 242.
  • Support crew base management, staffing, reporting, disciplinary processes, and the development of a professional, accountable, and safety-focused work environment.
  • Flexible schedule to accommodate nights, weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, and respond to operational needs outside of normal business hours
  • Regular and consistent engagement, participation and promotion of Herzog’s Culture and its essential behaviors are a requirement for this position.
  • Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.
