The RN provides nursing care guided by the ANA Standards of Professional Nursing Practice and Code of Ethics. The role involves assessing patients, developing and implementing individualized plans of care, administering treatments and medications, monitoring and documenting patient status, and collaborating with physicians and other healthcare professionals. The RN also educates patients and families about illnesses, injuries, treatment, and home-care needs; provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides; and supports the development of colleagues, new hires, and students through precepting and mentoring. The RN collects and analyzes patient health data, identifies nursing diagnoses and expected outcomes, and evaluates and revises care plans as needed. Care should be evidence-based, family-centered, developmentally and age-appropriate, and culturally relevant. The RN uses standing orders and applicable policies to initiate treatments, medications, and emergency or resuscitative measures; documents relevant observations and interventions; and considers safety, effectiveness, cost, and efficient use of resources. The RN contributes to quality improvement, evidence-based practice, professional development, and the integration of research into nursing care.
