The RN works in a 12-bed Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU), caring for patients with conditions including acute myocardial infarction (AMI), coronary artery disease (CAD), and peripheral vascular disease (PVD). Patient assignments are typically 1:2 or 1:1 depending on acuity. Nurses titrate drips, read cardiac strips, and may care for patients requiring an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), or fresh open-heart surgery (OHS) patients arriving from the operating room. The unit has in-house intensivists, a charge nurse and house supervisor available 24/7, and respiratory therapy available in the ICU 24/7. Monitoring is provided by in-room Nihon Kohden monitors; there are no monitor technicians. The position includes 12-hour shifts, weekend and holiday work, call or standby, and floating as needed to ICU, PCU, medical-surgical, or telemetry units at either campus, based on department skill needs. The dress code is navy blue, and unit- or department-specific orientation is provided.
