About The Position

The Medical Short Stay (MSS) unit, located on the 8th floor of the Tower at West Penn Hospital, is a 26-bed unit with a mix of private and semi-private rooms. It provides specialized care to patients with blood cancer diagnoses and autoimmune diseases, including various infusion therapies like biological and anticancer treatments. Nurses on this unit are involved in new protocols and the innovation of treatments for this patient population. The unit also serves as a collection center for cellular therapies such as Stem Cells, Chimeric Antigen Receptors (Car- T Cells), and Tumor Infiltrating Lymphocytes (TILS) via apheresis procedures. Nurses working in MSS are educated and trained to be competent in all aspects of nursing care within the department.

Requirements

  • Current State of PA RN licensure OR Current multi-state licensure through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
  • Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
  • Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate
  • Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
  • CPR certification

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in area of specialty
  • 1 year or more experience with infusion therapy (chemotherapy, cellular infusion)

Responsibilities

  • Assesses human responses and plans, implements and evaluates nursing care for individuals or families.

  • Derives culturally and age appropriate expected outcomes involving the patient, family and other health care providers.
  • Analyzes the health status of the individuals and families comparing the data with the norm, when possible, to determine patient care needs.
  • Assesses patient reports/records change of condition and notifies physician and/or supervisor and intervenes appropriately and documents accordingly.
  • Accepts assignments in areas other than primary unit, and performs duties within individualized competency.
