About The Position

The RN Shift Supervisor is responsible for the supervision and daily operation of the nursing houses during their scheduled shift. This includes overseeing staff to ensure adequate nursing care, accurate documentation, and adherence to physician's orders. The supervisor also informs families of significant changes in resident conditions and is responsible for staffing coverage to maintain prescribed levels. They assume ultimate responsibility for all resident care delivered during duty hours and oversee ancillary personnel performance in the absence of their department head, intervening when problems arise. The role also involves ensuring timely documentation of resident changes, assessing drastic changes in resident conditions and initiating immediate care directives, and ensuring proper communication of resident information to the following shift. Additionally, the supervisor completes job performance evaluations for licensed personnel, assists the Director of Nursing Services (DNS) in planning and directing the Nursing Department, monitors staff adherence to policies and procedures (e.g., medication administration), delivers educational programs, assigns staff to in-service classes, assists licensed staff with physician orders, determines the need for notifications of physicians, families, or administration, actively participates in nursing administrative meetings, writes investigative reports on incidents, submits quarterly meeting minutes, and has access to the entire medical record of all patients/residents. The position requires adherence to ethical standards, the facility's corporate compliance plan, and confidentiality of protected health information.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved/accredited School of Nursing.
  • Currently licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State.
  • Previous leadership experience.
  • At least one-year supervisory experience in the field of nursing.
  • Active interest in gerontological and rehabilitative nursing.
  • Active interest in pursuing continuing education to keep knowledge and skills current.
  • Knowledge of New York State codes.
  • Demonstrates competency by completing an annual job specific skills checklist.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in nursing skills and leadership ability.

  • One year geriatric nursing preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and manage the daily operation of the nursing houses during the scheduled shift.
  • Oversee staff to provide adequate nursing care and ensure physician's orders are followed.
  • Document resident conditions accurately and inform families of significant changes.
  • Manage staffing coverage for the individual shift and ensure prescribed levels are maintained.
  • Assume responsibility for all resident care delivered during duty hours.
  • Oversee ancillary personnel performance in the absence of their department head and address problems.
  • Ensure nursing staff implements timely documentation of resident changes in the resident record and/or care plan.
  • Assess sudden or drastic changes in residents' condition and initiate directive for immediate care with appropriate documentation.
  • Ensure proper communication of resident-related information to the following shift.
  • Complete job performance evaluations for licensed personnel assigned to the shift.
  • Provide guidance and suggestions to other staff members responsible for evaluations.
  • Assist the DNS in planning and directing the Nursing Department, including policy interpretation and administration.
  • Monitor nursing staff to ensure policies and procedures are followed, including proper administration of medications and treatment.
  • Deliver educational programs to staff members and maintain attendance records.
  • Continue orientation of new employees assigned to that shift.
  • Assign staff members to in-service classes and continuing education programs.
  • Assist licensed staff with notation of physician orders and interpret transcription.
  • Determine the need for notifications of physician, families, and/or administration of events occurring on shift.
  • Actively participate in nursing administrative meetings.
  • Write investigative reports on all incidents involving significant injuries per facility policy.
  • Submit quarterly meeting minutes to the Director of Nursing Services.
  • Perform duties according to the highest ethical and moral standards and in adherence with the facility's corporate compliance plan and all applicable governing laws.
  • Adhere to the facility's confidentiality statement in accessing and safeguarding protected health information (PHI) of residents and employees.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Director of Nursing Services.
