About The Position

The Obstetrics Department at West Penn Hospital consists of 15 Labor & Delivery beds, 6 Triage Rooms, 3 C-Section Operating Rooms, 4 PACU beds, and a 20-bed antepartum unit. Nurses in this department are cross-trained to work in all areas. Requirements

  • High School/GED
  • 2 years of experience in labor and delivery, NICU, or newborn care
  • Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
  • Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate
  • Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
  • Current State of PA RN licensure OR Current multi-state licensure through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
  • CPR certification
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification

Responsibilities

  • Providing direct care to newborns immediately following birth.
  • Attending births, conducting comprehensive assessments, stabilizing newborns, and facilitating a seamless transition to postnatal care.
  • Collaborating closely with obstetricians, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal outcomes for both mother and baby.
  • Providing immediate neonatal care during and immediately after delivery, responding promptly to emergent situations.
  • Performing APGAR scoring, evaluating vital signs, and administering necessary interventions (suctioning, warming, stimulation, oxygen, resuscitation).
  • Accurately documenting all assessments, interventions, and observations; communicating effectively with the delivery team and neonatal provider.
  • Obtaining vital signs, weight, length, and head circumference; facilitating skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding initiation; administering routine medications and vaccinations.
  • Educating parents on immediate newborn care and breastfeeding; providing emotional support during the birthing process.
  • Coordinating with the labor and delivery team, neonatal providers, and postnatal units; participating in debriefings and case reviews.
  • Adhering to hospital policies, protocols, and evidence-based practices; maintaining NRP certification.
  • Conducting postpartum follow-up phone calls to address patient concerns, provide education, and monitor progress, documenting all interactions in the electronic health record.
  • Providing maternal-child patient rounding, focusing on early detection of potential complications and ensuring timely intervention.
  • Other duties as assigned or requested.
