About The Position

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Huntsville Hospital for Women and Children is an 11-bed unit caring for critically ill children aged 0-18. The PICU is staffed by RNs, NPs, and Pediatric Intensivists who collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to provide acute care. The unit offers a progressive educational program, including monthly inservices from physicians, to train staff in pediatric critical care. The PICU RN is responsible for providing care to children with life-threatening or high-acuity conditions requiring constant monitoring. This involves assessing patients with various dysfunctions (respiratory, cardiac, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, orthopedic, endocrine, and neurologic), planning and delivering safe, age-appropriate care in critical situations, including titrating drips, performing technical procedures, and utilizing various equipment. The RN also evaluates patient responses to care and progress toward outcomes, ensuring clinical and service excellence during their assigned shift.

Requirements

  • Graduate of state board School of Nursing with current Alabama or multi-state licensure
  • BLS required before the conclusion of the orientation period.
  • PALS required within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Provides care for children and adolescents from 0-18 years of age, with life-threatening or high-acuity conditions that require constant monitoring.
  • Identifies patient needs and priorities for care through detailed assessment of children who have respiratory, cardiac, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, orthopedic, endocrine and neurologic dysfunction.
  • Plans and delivers safe, age-appropriate care under critical situations based on the patient’s needs to include titration of drips, multiple technical procedures and use of a variety of equipment for acute care.
  • Evaluates the patient’s response to care and the attainment of or progress toward expected outcomes.
  • Is accountable for outcomes of patient care delivered during the assigned shift, and strives to provide clinical and service excellence.
