The Prince Surgical Critical Care Unit is a 22-bed intensive care unit specializing in the care of critically ill trauma and surgical patients. The unit cares for geriatric rib fractures, traumatic brain injury, multi-trauma patients, and the critical care adult burn population. Surgical patients include trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, surgical oncology, and vascular surgery. Nurses also provide care to medical and neuro critically ill patients. Nurses are competent in ventilator support, titratable medications (cardiac and sedation), and assist with procedures like bedside tracheostomies and central line placement. With experience, nurses can train for continuous renal replacement therapy and critical care burn patient management. This fast-paced unit relies on teamwork and an interdisciplinary approach. RNs will utilize the nursing process to provide professional nursing care, incorporating patient-family centered care principles to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and discharge. RNs provide quality patient care under the direction of the Nurse Leader according to Corewell Health policies and procedures, recognizing the impact of nursing care and patient/family partnerships on patient outcomes. The RN partners with and utilizes patient/family input and goals in planning the plan of care and develops teaching strategies for patient/family, documenting education and learning appropriately in the health record.
