About The Position

The RN Resident - Registered Nurse - Post Trauma/Ortho position is a full-time role on the nights shift within the Ortho/Trauma Unit at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center. This unit is a 52-bed facility with 9 stepdown beds, providing care for patients from TICU, Trauma ED, and PACU, as well as those undergoing elective orthopedic surgeries like knee, hip, and shoulder replacements. The unit is described as a fast-paced environment requiring critical thinking, time-management, and teamwork, with collaboration among RNs, LPNs, and techs. The Registered Nurse I works under general supervision, delivering high-quality care for patients with simple to complex health problems, embodying OU Health's core values: Patients First, Relentless Excellence, Integrity, Inclusion, Learning, and Teamwork. This role is for a novice or advanced beginner nurse advancing to competent, who relies on rules and may begin to formulate principles based on experience. The nurse is responsible for assigned patients, documenting responses to interventions, assisting with examinations and procedures, monitoring physiological data, administering medications, managing IV infusions and blood products, ensuring safe and competent patient care, resolving patient complaints, informing patients and families about procedures and care plans, making referrals, and fostering professional growth through mentorship and continuous learning. The role also involves developing a career plan, fostering an inclusive workforce, and delegating tasks to support staff.

Requirements

Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
0-3 years of experience in patient care as a Registered Nurse.
Current Registered Nurse License (RN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact Registered Nurse (eNLC)).
Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification required upon hire.
Knowledge of basic professional nursing theory, practices, techniques, and procedures.
Ability to organize, plan, coordinate, and evaluate nursing services and apply nursing techniques.
Ability to maintain civility and good working relationships with other employees.
Ability to respond effectively to cultural and language needs of patients and visitors.
Skilled in computer applications designed to ensure quality and safety measures for patients.
Ability to establish and maintain integrity and trust with patients by advocating in the patient’s best interest.
Ability to engage and manage conflicts and disagreements in a constructive manner.
Ability to maintain compliance accreditation with local, state, and federal regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

Aligns behaviors with OU Health values and maintains nursing professional practice standards.
Assumes responsibility for an assigned patient or group of patients.
Documents patient responses to nursing interventions and prescribed medical treatments, noting all changes in physician order on assigned patients.
Assists physician in the examination of patients and in performing minor diagnostic procedures and treatment.
Obtains and monitors physiological data of patients, observes the physiological manifestations of patients, and intervenes when necessary.
Administers medication as prescribed.
Initiates, regulates and monitors intravenous infusions and blood products.
Delivers patient care safely and competently.
Resolves patient complaints in a timely manner in accordance with policy and in collaboration with support staff.
Informs patient and family of hospital procedures and shares care plan during the time of care and at the time of discharge.
Makes referrals regarding patient care needs to appropriate personnel.
Fosters a growth mindset through seeking mentorship, remaining open to coaching and feedback, and maintaining professional certification(s)/licensure in order to perpetually develop and uphold the skills required for proficiency within the nursing profession.
