About The Position

The UT Southwestern October 2026 (Cohort 21) RN Residency Program is designed for BSN graduates from the December 2025, May 2026, and August 2026 graduating classes, as well as experienced BSN RNs with less than 12 months of RN experience by October 2026. This is a planned, comprehensive 12-month program to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to deliver safe, quality care in a specific clinical setting, supporting organizational enculturation, practice-based learning, and professional development. The program aims to help participants demonstrate the standards of practice defined by the American Nurses Association and other specialty nursing organizations.

Requirements

  • BSN degree
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Texas RN license
  • Active American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support certification
  • Completed online application
  • Resume showing all work experience, involvement in professional organizations, and history of volunteerism
  • Transcript (most recent–unofficial is acceptable) with 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Graduate Nurses must have their license posted on the board of nursing before close of business on October 1, 2026.
  • Bachelor's Degree Candidates are new nurse graduates with a minimum of a Bachelor's degree who have graduated from an ACEN or CCNE accredited/state approved program or Associate's Degree (ADN) with current UTSW experience.
  • Current Texas (or BNE Compact State) license
  • BASIC LIFE SUPPORT Course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).

Nice To Haves

  • Less than 12 months RN experience at start of program (October 2026) for experienced RNs
  • Internal candidates must apply as an internal candidate and are asked to upload a letter of recommendation from current manager

Responsibilities

  • Performs and accurately documents physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments, considering age-specific criteria.
  • Anticipates patient and/or patient's family needs and expectations to develop an appropriate plan of care, utilizing critical thinking and prioritizing nursing care.
  • Identifies and implements appropriate nursing interventions based on assessment and completes accurate documentation.
  • Acts as a coordinator of the interdisciplinary plan of care, collaborating with the healthcare team.
  • Prioritizes nursing interventions, promptly identifies changes in patient condition, and takes appropriate follow-up action.
  • Evaluates implemented interventions and modifies care as needed, documenting accurately.
  • Adheres to hospital and Department of Nursing policies, procedures, and standards of practice.
  • Provides appropriate and timely education to patients and families, documenting all education provided and assessing understanding.
  • Welcomes and orients patients/families to the unit, encouraging participation in care and explaining procedures and medications.
  • Assumes accountability for all actions, reporting errors promptly and taking appropriate follow-up action.
  • Acts as an effective patient/family advocate, responding to complaints and utilizing the chain of command appropriately.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Attends scheduled staff meetings and mandatory educational sessions.
  • Provides supervision and direction to unlicensed support personnel and nurses new to the environment, delegating duties appropriately.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
