About The Position

Dr. Randall Bateman’s lab investigates the causes, and future diagnosis and treatments of Alzheimer’s disease utilizing a wide variety of assays and techniques from basic applications, such as quantitative measurement of stable-isotope labeled peptides to clinical translational studies in diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease. We have an ongoing clinical study to collect matched blood and cerebrospinal fluid from patients with memory concerns in the clinic and a study called the Study to Understand Novel Biomarkers in Researching Dementia (SUNBIRD) to validate blood biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease in a large clinic-based cohort. This position is a member of a multidisciplinary research team and performs duties associated with the coordination and implementation of research studies/projects, data collection, and the management of data generated by study protocols. This position involves assessment of research participants and interactions with research participants, family, and caregivers in a research setting. This position interacts with participants who have mild to moderate dementia and healthy control volunteers. This position involves being on call as needed to coordinate brain autopsies.

Requirements

  • A diploma, certification or degree is not required.
  • Basic Life Support - American Heart Association, Basic Life Support - American Red Cross, Registered Nurse - Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Registered Nurse - Missouri Division of Professional Registration
  • Related Nursing Or Research (2 Years)
  • Basic Life Support certification (Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements).

Responsibilities

  • Performs research study and clinical procedures including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of participants to generate study data according to established protocol; collects data (e.g., basic health information and vital signs), performs blood draws; assists with a neurological lumbar puncture (spinal tap) and documents as required by protocol; monitors and manages participants in the inpatient research unit; assists principal investigators and physicians.
  • Works with staff to identify, screen, and enroll study participants; serves as the contact person for research participants; provides study participants, families, and caregivers education about the studies, dementia, and dementia care.
  • On a rotating call schedule for brain donation and brain autopsy coordination.
  • Provides education to clinical providers and participants on study procedures and test results.
  • Prepares/submits event reports in adherence with study procedures, budget, and established guidelines.
  • Performs other duties incidental to the work described herein which may include training and overseeing students, authorizing payments, and reviewing scientific literature to keep abreast of new developments.
