About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Comprehensive Cancer Center provides compassionate, individualized care to patients receiving radiation oncology services. The RN conducts nursing assessments, provides site-specific education, implements patient care plans, assists physicians with consultations and follow-up examinations, and coordinates care with interdisciplinary services. The role works under the general supervision of the Radiation Oncology Clinical Supervisor. The RN prepares for consultations by ensuring relevant medical records, laboratory results, imaging reports and films are available; obtains vital signs; and provides an educational video. For patients proceeding with radiation treatment, the RN helps arrange required pre-treatment examinations and simulation, coordinating additional needs such as dental prophylaxis for head and neck cases. The RN also helps patients address transportation challenges by providing transportation resources or involving a Navigator. For follow-up clinics, the RN ensures that required records and tests are available, obtains vital signs, assesses radiation treatment sites and potential site-specific problems, and provides appropriate nursing instruction. The RN arranges referrals, orders tests as directed by the physician, supports patient access to support programs, and helps ensure follow-up appointments are scheduled. The RN coordinates high-dose radiation implants and prostate seed implants with physicians, operating rooms, imaging services, physicists, therapists, admitting, and other relevant departments. Responsibilities include scheduling, pre- and post-procedure education, arranging examinations, following up on discharge instructions and appointments, and conducting post-discharge telephone calls for prostate seed implant patients. The RN also orders and transports special equipment for use or sterilization. Other related duties may be assigned or requested.
