About The Position

Summit Medical Center is seeking a PreOp Registered Nurse to join their Surgery Team at the Oklahoma City Hospital. The center is known for its quality services and aims to provide a satisfying work experience for its employees. This position involves admitting patients to the clinical area, providing comprehensive nursing care to preoperative patients, and developing individualized nursing care plans. The role operates within a teamwork concept, and employees may be cross-trained to perform duties in other clinical areas as patient and staffing needs evolve.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing or vocational school.
  • Licensed to practice in the state of Oklahoma.
  • Previous preoperative care experience required.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • ACLS required within one year of employment.
  • Ability to adequately assess, diagnose, plan, and implement nursing interventions and evaluate patient condition.
  • Compliance with the attendance policy.
  • Compliance with continuing and mandatory education programs.
  • Possesses appropriate communication skills to practice collaborative nursing.
  • Ability to respond quickly, physically, and mentally when priorities and /or the patient’s condition changes.
  • Ability to read and write (legibly).
  • Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively.
  • Ability to understand and resolve simple to complex problems.
  • Ability to understand simple to complex instructions.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to function independently without constant supervision.
  • Nursing care of the preoperative patient.
  • Operation of vital signs monitors.
  • Assessment Skills.
  • A basic understanding of nursing diagnosis.
  • ACLS and /or BCLS Principles of Standard Precautions.
  • IV Therapy.
  • CPR.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures the preoperative area has a clean and therapeutic environment for all patients, at all times.
  • Ensures supplies and equipment needed are available and in good working order.
  • Admits the patient to the unit and prepares him/her for the scheduled procedure.
  • Makes initial assessment and determines the nursing needs of the patient, communicates additional discharge needs when applicable (transportation, durable medical equipment).
  • Explains nursing procedures and actions taken to help reduce anxiety.
  • Identifies the patient’s physical and mental status.
  • Monitors the patient’s medical condition and reports any significant changes to the admitting physician or anesthesiologist.
  • Assures surgical consent, preoperative test results, and H&P are in the medical record prior to the proposed procedure.
  • Reports any important health history facts to the operating room nurse.
  • Gives patients and family members emotional support as necessary.
  • Documents patient care delivered accurately in the medical record.
  • Implements doctor’s orders in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Educates patients and family.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
  • Maintains established center/departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Maintains department records, reports, and files as required.
  • Maintains and cares for department equipment and supplies.
  • Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and center-related business.
  • Develops and maintains an effective working relationship with patients, families, visitors, and other center employees.
  • Documents concisely, precisely, and accurately on all records or documents as indicated by policy.
  • Participates in Quality Assessment activities as directed for the continuous improvement of patient care and center business.
  • Understands and maintains clinical competencies (general, age-specific, and drug administration).
