About The Position

The Preadmission Testing Registered Nurse (PAT RN) is responsible for providing comprehensive preoperative nursing assessments to ensure patients are safe and prepared for surgery. The PAT RN reviews patient medical histories, medications, laboratory and diagnostic results, and identifies potential risks that may impact the surgical plan. This position works collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, primary care providers, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure all required testing, documentation, and clearances are completed prior to the day of surgery. This position plays an essential role in reducing surgical delays and cancellations while ensuring patients receive safe, high-quality perioperative care through thorough preoperative evaluation and coordination.

Requirements

  • Current Texas Registered Nurse license.
  • Current BLS certification required.
  • Strong assessment, communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent clinical assessment and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to changing patient conditions.
  • Strong communication and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to patient safety, quality outcomes, and exceptional customer service.

Nice To Haves

  • ACLS preferred.
  • Previous perioperative, PACU, ICU, ED, or PAT experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive preoperative nursing assessments in person and by telephone.
  • Review medical history, surgical history, allergies, medications, and current health status.
  • Identify high-risk patients and escalate concerns to anesthesia or the appropriate provider.
  • Coordinate required laboratory studies, diagnostic testing, medical clearances, and specialty consultations.
  • Provide patient education regarding preoperative instructions, medication management, fasting guidelines, infection prevention, and postoperative expectations.
  • Verify completion and accuracy of required documentation including H&P, consents, and physician orders.
  • Collaborate with physician offices, scheduling, registration, anesthesia, and perioperative staff to ensure patients are appropriately prepared.
  • Review abnormal laboratory or diagnostic results and communicate findings according to established policies.
  • Utilize critical thinking and evidence-based practice to identify barriers that could delay or cancel surgery.
  • Maintain compliance with CMS, DNV, AORN, hospital policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Accurately document assessments and communications within the electronic medical record.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, patient safety activities, and departmental education.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold professional nursing standards.
