About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is responsible for the planning and delivery of patient care through the nursing processes of assessment, implementation, and evaluation. This role involves overseeing the plan of care, utilizing effective problem-solving strategies, and applying evidence-based practices. The RN supports and upholds the quality standards of a Magnet designated hospital and the Patient Bill of Rights, practicing under the supervision of the Nursing Manager/Director while providing compassionate and family-centered care for Pediatric Intensive Care Unit patients.

Requirements

  • RN - Registered Nurse
  • RN Licensure within the State of Florida or Multi-State Enhanced Nursing License Compact (eNLC) – maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
  • CPR BLS -American Heart Association BLS - must maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
  • PALS - American Heart Association PALS - must maintain active and in good standing throughout employment within two years of hire
  • BSN degree or currently enrolled in BSN program
  • Able to analyze and interpret data and utilize the information to make judgments regarding patient care
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to positively influence, hold self and others accountable
  • Able to work effectively in collaborative environment
  • Ability to apply principles of evidence-based practice, analytical thinking and service excellence in practice
  • Able to float to various nursing units while maintaining the delivery of clinical excellence and high quality service
  • Knowledge of diverse cultures’ belief systems and values around health issues

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience as an RN in ICU environment preferred
  • Nursing experience in a pediatric healthcare ICU setting is strongly preferred
  • ICU critical care training academy experience preferred
  • National certification Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN) within 2 years of hire or (CCRN) preferably within 3 -5 years of hire
  • Possess proficiency in computers and Electronic Health Record (EHR) preferred
  • Experience with procedures training process for specialties: Apheresis and ECMO preferred
  • Leadership experience preferred to take on rotating charge nurse duties after one year

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver care utilizing nursing processes: assessment, implementation and evaluation.
  • Oversee the plan of care, utilize effective problem solving strategies and apply evidence based practice.
  • Support and uphold quality standards of a Magnet designated hospital and Patient Bill of Rights.
  • Practice under the supervision of the Nursing Manager/Director and provide compassionate and family centered care for Pediatric Intensive Care Unit patients.
  • Ensure completion of patient admission history and accurately complete the discharge planning process as per department and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Plan, implement and document the plan of care in collaboration with the other disciplines and services to assure safe and efficient care.
  • Provide nursing care that includes IV site monitoring, specimen collection and assist medical team with specific procedures.
  • Follow physician’s orders, administer and reconstitute medications when needed.
  • Adhere to five rights of medication administration per Medication Administration policy.
  • Collaborate and participate in daily rounds with multi-disciplinary team as appropriate and foster a Family Centered Care Environment.
  • Utilize electronic innovations to provide efficient patient care and attend to patient call lights in a manner that promotes patient safety per hospital policy.
  • Ensure proper and safe sedation administration to patients and monitor recovery as per the Sedation policy and procedure.
  • Complete all nursing multi-system assessment that includes head to toe, vitals, dressing changes, suction, feeding, bathing, med administration, and repositioning.
  • Ensure appropriate restraint orders, use and documentation as required by Sedation policy and procedure.
  • Access electronic health record (EHR) independently according to hospital policy and complete accurate and timely documentation in the patient’s electronic health record.
  • Communicate and document critical lab results per hospital policy and procedures.
  • Communicate with patients and families to review plan of care and solicit input; communicate any patient and family concerns to physician.
  • Promote a working environment that is “error free” in all quality indicators through assessment of all body systems - prevention of central line and catheter associated urinary tract infections, avoidance of falls, ouch-free procedural pain and pain reduction, observe skin integrity for prevention of skin breakdown, ensure proper and safe wound care, secure endotracheal tubes when applicable, and zero based medication errors – by following the 5 rights of Medication Administration, consistently providing high-quality safe care as prompted.
  • Provide patient information and effectively complete the hand off process during walking rounds at shift change and patient reassignments.
  • Ensure proper personal protective equipment (PPE) indication and use.
