About The Position

The PICU at OHSU's Doernbecher Children's Hospital is a regional referral center for all critically ill and injured children that operates 24/7. The primary purpose of the PICU is to provide optimal state of the art critical care nursing to any infant, child or adolescent who presents with a serious injury and/or illness. Care is provided for patients from birth to 18 years of age. Older patients are cared for on a case-by-case basis. The PICU team cares for children across a vast spectrum of health issues including trauma, surgery, respiratory, cardiac, hematology/oncology and neurologic disorders. Services provided include Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, High Frequency ventilation, and operative procedures in the unit for patients too unstable to move to the OR, recovery of postoperative cardiac, neurosurgical, general surgery patients who are hemodynamically unstable or who continue to require post-operative ventilator assistance.

Requirements

• Minimum of 1 year PICU RN experience or 2 years Peds acute care RN experience
• Pediatric CCRN certification
• BSN Graduates: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) 30 days before start date.
• ADN Graduates: Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program 30 days before the start date. Associate degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire
• 6 hours of Trauma Education annually
• Annual pediatric competencies
• Annual occupational health compliance requirements
• Annual Point-of-Care Competencies: Capillary Blood Glucose, Urine Ketone Testing
• MRI Safety Competency
• Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License
• BLS and PALS from AHA required. New hires will be enrolled and required to complete during orientation
• Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Responsibilities

• Provide optimal state of the art critical care nursing to any infant, child or adolescent who presents with a serious injury and/or illness.
• Care for patients from birth to 18 years of age, with older patients cared for on a case-by-case basis.
• Care for children with a vast spectrum of health issues including trauma, surgery, respiratory, cardiac, hematology/oncology and neurologic disorders.
• Provide Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) in collaboration with pediatric perfusion services.
• Administer continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT).
• Assist with hemodialysis (provided by dialysis services).
• Administer peritoneal dialysis.
• Manage patients on High Frequency ventilation.
• Provide care for operative procedures in the unit for patients too unstable to move to the OR.
• Manage recovery of postoperative cardiac, neurosurgical, general surgery patients who are hemodynamically unstable or who continue to require post-operative ventilator assistance.
• Provide continuing care and monitoring of patients in locations outside of PICU including MRI, CT, Nuclear Med, Ultrasound, and Radiology.
