About The Position

Provides age and developmentally appropriate direct patient clinical care, encompassing both physical and psychological needs for preemie, neonate, infant, adolescent, and adult patient populations. Provides care with a focus on patient safety; initiates, implements, and updates the plan of care and patient/family education appropriately. Delivers high-quality patient care through training and experience in Obstetrics and Level One Nursery, according to the Obstetrics Scope of Service. Able to scrub and/or circulate in the event of an emergency cesarean section. Adheres to and practices the St. John's Health Corporate Compliance Program and participates in Performance Improvement activities.

Requirements

  • ASN required.
  • Must be able to function independently.
  • Current RN license with the authority to practice in the State of Wyoming.
  • BLS required at the time of hire.
  • NRP required within three months of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • BSN preferred.
  • Recent high risk obstetric experience preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years nursing experience in L&D preferred.
  • ACLS preferred.
  • STABLE preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain and review all patient data using observational, interviewing, interpretation, and critical thinking skills in an age-specific and developmentally appropriate manner.
  • Identify risk factors and provide for patient safety. Implement measures to prevent injury from environmental hazards.
  • Practice autonomously and consistently with professional nursing standards.
  • Identify changes in patient status, exercise critical thinking and independent judgment within the context of a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
  • Develop a plan of care that is unique to each patient's needs, evaluates patient response to the plan of care, and reflects measurable goals that are mutually set with the patient.
  • Address patient and family's spiritual and emotional needs utilizing a holistic approach.
  • Evaluate patient response to pain management interventions. Offer alternative pain management therapies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and awareness of medication action, side effects, and protocols for use. Using 2 patient identifiers, give medication safely and accurately according to policy and procedure.
  • Organize and prioritize care of multiple patients with varying levels of acuity in a timely and efficient manner, as well as with a positive attitude.
  • Manage specimen collection, handling, and disposition according to hospital policy. Label blood specimens at the patient's bedside.
  • Use supplies and equipment within safe parameters. Ensure equipment is functioning properly before use. Report equipment malfunction following the appropriate reporting procedures.
  • Identify continuity of care needs for discharge and follow-up using appropriate resources.
  • Initiate and complete computerized Event Reports for unusual events consistently. Report near misses.
  • Assess age and population-specific and developmentally appropriate patient and family education needs.
  • Assess readiness to learn based on patient perception, education level, and expectation of care.
  • Initiate and incorporate patient and family education into the plan of care.
  • Provide clear information to assist the patient to make informed decisions.
  • Encourage patients' active involvement in their care.
  • Communicate up-dated status reports and clear information to patient/family as appropriate, to make informed decisions.
  • Assess neonate at delivery and perform neonatal resuscitation. Conduct postpartum assessments.
  • Demonstrate the ability to be flexible, organized, and function under stressful situations.
  • Keep the department clean, orderly, and stocked daily.
  • Complete all documentation, utilizing appropriate forms and systems. Complete and sign daily charge nurse forms.
  • Demonstrate the ability to assess and assist with emergency situations. Function in the charge nurse role as assigned.
