About The Position

The Medical Short Stay (MSS) unit is located on the 8th floor of the Tower and has 26 beds, including 12 private and 6 semi-private rooms. The unit provides care to patients with blood cancer diagnoses and autoimmune diseases, offering a variety of infusion therapies such as biological and anticancer therapies. Nurses on this unit are educated on new protocols and participate in innovation or new treatments for this special patient population. The unit also serves as a collection center for cellular therapies, including Stem Cells, Chimeric Antigen Receptors (Car- T Cells), and Tumor Infiltrating Lymphocytes (TILS) via apheresis procedures. Nurses working in MSS are educated and trained to be competent in all aspects of nursing care within the department. Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • 3 years of leadership experience
  • Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
  • Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate
  • Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
  • Current State of PA RN licensure OR Current multi-state licensure through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC)
  • CPR certification

Responsibilities

  • Manages, supervises, and coordinates the daily operations of a specific patient care department, providing clinical and administrative leadership and expertise.
  • Contributes to the strategic planning process and attainment of goals for both their departments and the organization.
  • Responsible for the implementation of the mission, vision, philosophy, core values, evidence-based practice, and standards of the organization and nursing service within their defined areas of responsibility.
  • Demonstrates and role models professional behavior with all staff interactions.
  • Serves as a change agent and role model for change to assist staff in accepting and embracing necessary change.
  • Conducts monthly unit conferences with minutes, including discussions of unit and organizational activities and goals.
  • Completes annual performance appraisals on associates.
  • Attends greater than 50% of leadership meetings.
  • Promotes unit-based shared governance, including ongoing support through consultation and assistance in eliminating barriers.
  • Promotes RN career ladder with staff.
  • Promotes and encourages nursing specialty certification.
  • Identifies, plans, and implements activities in specified clinical departments to ensure patient care is delivered in accordance with professional standards for nursing practice, is evidence-based, meets patient safety goals and standards, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Monitors departmental performance in appropriate EBPs, quality, and patient safety goals, meeting assigned goals.
  • Develops an action plan for any goal not met, including a timeline.
  • Participates in 85% of monthly Joint Commission mock tracers.
  • Develops a yearly unit-based quality plan with the unit-based clinical practice and PI council based on identified unit needs.
  • Assures departmental participation and compliance with Six Sigma project goals related to throughput.
  • Assures that the department works collaboratively with patients, families, peers, and other departments in the organization to meet established organizational goals for customer satisfaction.
  • Reviews bi-weekly Press Ganey reports, providing feedback to staff at monthly unit conferences.
  • Investigates and provides feedback for identified patient or departmental concerns.
  • Conducts Rounding for Purpose weekly to assess patient and family needs.
  • Develops departmental plans to address any improvement needs.
  • Meets or shows consistent progress toward meeting established patient satisfaction goals.
  • Demonstrates fiscal stewardship through effective and efficient use of staff, facilities, equipment, and other resources while maintaining patient care standards.
  • Maintains both FTE and Goods/Services within the established budget, completing variance reports according to established guidelines.
  • Utilizes established tools to monitor monthly budget performance, conducting drill-downs to explain variances as needed.
  • Completes staffing reports daily.
  • Addresses overtime use with individuals as needed, with documentation of discussion.
  • Reports budget performance at monthly unit conferences.
  • Fosters the development of staff through coaching, mentoring, and creating an environment that encourages learning and the use of research.
  • Assures appropriate orientation, education, credentialing, and professional development for personnel.
  • Encourages and facilitates staff membership on research committees and clinical practice councils.
  • Encourages and facilitates attendance at nursing grand rounds.
  • Fosters peer review.
  • Sets developmental goals with staff members at yearly evaluations.
  • Identifies one area for self-improvement annually and develops a plan to improve.
