About The Position

Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a 108-bed intensive and highly structured residential treatment facility for the psychiatric and behavioral health needs of adolescent males and females ages 11-18. The center features an on-site certified school, art and music therapists, and vocational programming. Located in Newport News, VA, a seaside city rich in maritime history, it offers convenient access to major North Eastern cities like Washington D.C. The Nursing Educator is responsible for assisting the Director of Nursing (DON) in evaluating, reviewing, designing, and implementing hospital training events for all RN, LPN, and MHT staff, covering required training. Additionally, this role provides patient nursing assessments on an as-needed basis.

Requirements

  • Current Virginia RN licensure.
  • BSN from an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years direct clinical experience preferred in a psychiatric or mental health setting.
  • Direct experience in staff education, nursing practices, patient assessments, education concepts, practices and procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • MSN preferred.
  • Experience in Psychiatric Nursing desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Regularly facilitates and/or conducts required training classes with all Nursing Services staff.
  • Works closely with the DON and Nursing Supervisors to review current education and training needs.
  • Recommends improvements to training programs as needed or as identified.
  • Provides on-going nursing education to staff on a variety of topics as directly relates to performance improvement initiatives, JACHO, and other State or Federal Regulatory Agency standards/requirements.
  • Provides feedback to the PI Committee, reporting staff education and recommendations for improvements.
  • Works in a collaborative manner with the Infection Control Nurse to identify and assist in training as needed.
  • Researches current best practices among other institutions/facilities to ensure the hospital is providing the most recent and best practices with respect to staff education and training.
  • Meets with all new nursing staff employees to ensure a complete orientation to nursing services.
  • Maintains knowledge of the TERM document and each element of the document as it relates to the position.
