About The Position
The RN NICU provides specialized, compassionate nursing care for vulnerable pediatric patients and support for their parents and caregivers. The role requires decisiveness, preparation, understanding, and high-level critical thinking, along with knowledge of the physiological and psychological needs of young patients. The nurse coordinates patient care, monitors vital signs and life-support measures, responds to changes in patient condition, and works with families and the care team to promote safe, continuous care.
Responsibilities
- Prioritize, coordinate, and delegate patient-care activities.
- Evaluate vital signs according to standards of care and monitor life-support measures, including advanced heart and respiratory technology.
- Apply knowledge of complex patient conditions, including psychosocial needs.
- Maintain and advocate for a safe environment.
- Communicate promptly with patients, families, and appropriate care-team members about significant events, changes in condition, and questions or concerns.
- Prevent and treat wounds.
- Monitor and carry out Joint Commission infection-control and environment-of-care requirements.
- Promote continuity of care, efficient throughput, consistent communication, and a positive patient experience.
- Collaborate with the nursing supervisor to identify and meet patient-care needs, including when assignments or tasks cannot be completed promptly, effectively, or safely.
- Initiate patient and family education using appropriate resources and continuum-of-care services.
- Assist other team members without being asked.
