About The Position

The Neuroscience unit provides care to adolescent through geriatric patients ranging from 16-100+ who have a variety of diagnoses requiring medical or surgical interventions and recovery for Neurosurgical, Neurological, Stroke, Otolaryngology, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) conditions. This position is for night shifts. The department strives to be a unified team of expert clinicians, administrators, and support staff that provides patients with exceptional, compassionate care through strong leadership, clear communication, focused education, and evidence-based practice. The unit is a designated care unit for all lumbar drains, deep brain stimulators, acute strokes, and new tracheotomies. It also serves as an overflow unit for ophthalmology, orthopedic–spine, and cardiac/thoracic patients.

Requirements

  • 1 year RN experience in a hospital setting
  • BSN Graduates: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) 30 days before start date.
  • ADN Graduates: Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program 30 days before the start date.
  • Associate degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire
  • Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License
  • BLS at time of hire and must be issued by the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • BLS must not expire during orientation
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Nice To Haves

  • National certification in the specialty area is desired.
  • Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse (CNRN) certification
  • Certified Medical-Surgical Nurse (CMSN) certification.
  • Stroke Certified Registered Nurse (SCRN) certification
  • Experience in a high-level acuity medical facility.

Responsibilities

  • Provide pre and post neurosurgery care involving frequent neuro assessment, safety checks, and pain management for conditions such as intracranial hemorrhages, brain tumors, shunts, deep brain stimulators, vagal nerve stimulators, aneurysms, neuralgias, and traumatic brain injuries.
  • Provide care for patients undergoing spine surgeries for disc herniation, fractures, tumor removal, and congenital disorders.
  • Manage care for patients undergoing transphenodial resection of pituitary tumors, including management of lumbar drains, frequent labs, and close monitoring of specialized assessments.
  • Care for patients with encephalopathies, multiple sclerosis, Guillian-Barre syndrome, myasthenia gravis, auto-immune diseases, seizure disorders, and neurological disorders of unknown etiologies.
  • Provide certified acute care for stroke patients, including frequent observation and neuro assessment, with potential instability and high risk for complications.
  • Provide pre and post-operative care for Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery patients, including new tracheotomies and total laryngectomies, tissue transfers, thyroidectomy, parathyroidectomy, and resection of head and neck carcinomas. This involves specialized and frequent airway management, artificial airways, respiratory, flap, drain assessments, safety checks, and pain management.
  • Provide pre and post-operative care for Oral Maxillofacial Surgery patients, including jaw fractures, reconstruction, dental abscess, and complex dental procedures. This involves specialized and frequent airway management, respiratory assessments, safety checks, and pain management.
  • Perform annual Lumbar Drain (LD) Competency.
  • Complete 8 hours of Stroke Continuing Education annually.
  • Perform Annual Trans-radial (TR) Band Competency.
