About The Position

This is a full-time, night shift position for a Registered Nurse in the Neuro ICU. The unit is a 12-bed ICU specializing in the care of patients with non-traumatic brain injuries and other neurological conditions such as Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke, Seizure Disorders, Brain Tumor/Cancer, and Neuromuscular Conditions. The unit also serves as an alternative unit for neurosurgery patients. As a registered nurse, you are expected to consistently deliver the best in care and customer service, demonstrating respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy. RNs assume primary accountability for nursing coordination and provision of individualized care for patients of all ages, utilizing delegation and critical thinking skills to provide quality service through a team-oriented, collaborative approach.

Requirements

Graduate of a school of professional nursing from an accredited college or graduate of an approved program eligible to sit for the VA licensure exam.
Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.
AHA BLS-HCP required.
May be required to obtain/maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP based on specific work unit.
Computer skills required for electronic medical record (EPIC).

Responsibilities

Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care to achieve optimum patient outcomes for patients of all ages as appropriate to the service area.
Completes, documents, and uses age-specific admission and ongoing assessments to develop a plan of care.
Collaborates with members of the health care team, patient, and family to develop, implement, and evaluate an age-specific interdisciplinary plan of care, revising it according to changes in patient status.
Accurately administers and documents treatments and medications for patients of all ages utilizing automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
Identifies patient/family (caregiver) educational needs in a timely manner, incorporates them into the plan of care, implements, and documents appropriately.
Contributes to Carilion Clinic’s performance improvement activities.
Consistently demonstrates the role of patient advocate, protector of patient’s rights, and provider of psychological/social/cultural support.
Applies knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.
Determines and performs within clinical, leadership, and/or education pathways to support evidenced-based, quality patient care service and performance improvement.
Exhibits clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances.
Plans strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, resource consumption, and improve patient outcomes.
Functions as a role model for clinical practice to coworkers, students, and physicians.
Manages resources, establishes priorities, and modifies the environment to meet patient care needs.
Completes manager/director predetermined projects within specified time frames and according to pre-established guidelines.
Uses problem-solving methods to facilitate resolution to patient and personnel situations that present in the work area.
Takes an active role in the orientation of new employees.
Provides feedback to staff using appropriate communication and documentation.
Provides input into practice, environment, and work issues by participating on unit, hospital, and/or system activities that facilitate staff participation/input in decision-making.
Assists with providing education activities for the unit/department.
