The Queen’s Medical Center, founded in 1859, is the largest private, nonprofit hospital in Honolulu with 575 acute care beds. It serves as a major referral center for various specialties and is the only hospital in Hawaii with an organ transplant program and the state's first and only level one trauma center. The Queen Emma Tower Neuroscience ICU (NSICU) is a 14-bed unit (8 beds on QET4D and 6 beds on QET 5D) dedicated to the care of patients with neurological illnesses. The unit operates 24/7 with neurointensivist and neuroscience acute care nurse practitioner coverage. QMC's NSICU is the only one of its kind in Hawaii and supports the state's first TJC Comprehensive Stroke Center, ACS Level I Trauma Center, and NAEC Level IV Epilepsy Center. The NSICU provides care for adult, geriatric, and pediatric patients with conditions such as post-neurosurgical procedures, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, CNS tumors, status epilepticus, and neuromuscular illnesses. The unit can also accommodate overflow patients from medical, surgical, and cardiac ICUs.
