This position is for a Registered Nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), specifically NT9. The NICU cares for extremely preterm infants as well as term babies, requiring excellent assessment skills, critical thinking, and a passion for education. Nurses in this role will experience all levels of acuity, from feeding and comforting babies to caring for critically ill infants. The unit has 48 beds, including 23 Level 3 and 25 Level 2 beds. The patient population includes neonates with prematurity, hypoglycemia, transient tachypnea, respiratory distress syndrome, feeding difficulties/delays, medication withdrawal, and those undergoing whole body cooling. The typical nurse to patient ratio is 1:1 to 1:3. The department is a fast-paced unit with medically complex patients, relying on strong communication between team members and with family members. Supportive teamwork is crucial, and new and experienced team members empower each other to drive new patient care initiatives and promote a culture of inclusion. Frequent nursing skills and equipment used include IV insertion, NG/OG insertion, strong assessment skills, and medication administration. The unit also assists mothers with breastfeeding initiation and baby-friendly care.
