About The Position

The RN, Mental Health provides therapeutic, recovery-oriented nursing care to patients experiencing acute psychiatric conditions or behavioral health crises. This role conducts comprehensive mental and physical health assessments, monitors changes in patient status, and implements individualized nursing interventions that support safety, stabilization, and emotional well-being. Working collaboratively with psychiatrists, therapists, social workers, and interdisciplinary support staff, the RN helps ensure coordinated treatment planning and effective crisis response. As part of a supportive, team-based behavioral health environment, this position fosters a healing, trauma-informed setting that respects patient dignity and promotes engagement in the recovery process.

Requirements

  • Current or temporary RN license in North Dakota or compact RN licensure.
  • BLS certification required within orientation period.
  • RN program as evidenced by licensure.
  • Adequate vision, hearing, and communication skills are essential to observe behaviors, assess risk, and maintain awareness in an active unit environment.

  • Hospital experience is preferred, but not required.
  • As required by specific units.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct mental health and physical assessments, observing for changes in behavior, mood, risk level, or response to treatment.
  • Implement therapeutic interventions, administer medications, and monitor for side effects or adverse reactions to psychiatric treatments.
  • Participate in crisis intervention, de-escalation, and safety planning to maintain a secure and supportive environment for patients and staff.
  • Document assessments, interventions, and patient participation in treatment accurately within the electronic health record.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to develop, update, and evaluate individualized care plans that support stabilization and recovery.
  • Provide patient and family education on diagnosis, coping strategies, and available community resources as appropriate.
