The Nephrology/Urology Unit provides care for patients requiring hemodialysis and specialized urological care. Nurses hired to the unit receive training in peritoneal dialysis, a service offered only at this hospital in Athens. Nurses work with an interdisciplinary team to provide patient-centered care. The unit includes multiple skill levels and support from experienced charge nurses and a clinical manager. A unit council with representatives from all disciplines helps make unit-based decisions to support patient care. The staff nurse provides nursing care to patients from birth through the lifecycle, using the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care. The nurse works within organizational policies and procedures, demonstrates professional growth and accountability, maintains standards of practice, and coordinates assigned staff’s patient-care activities to provide quality nursing care. Patient ratios depend on patient volume and acuity; extenuating circumstances may result in lower or higher ratios.
