About The Position

The Medical Observation Unit is a 54-bed medical unit where patients are admitted from the Emergency Department. These patients often present with changes in mental status, require long-term placement, experience pain, or have cardiac issues, TIAs, rule-out CVAs, UTIs, pneumonia, or behavioral issues. Patients may be transferred to a progressive or inpatient unit if they meet criteria for a higher level of care. Staff are responsible for completing assessments and shift documentation according to the Observation documentation policy. The unit experiences rapid patient turnover, with staff potentially completing 1-4 discharges, transfers, and assessments during a 12-hour shift.

Requirements

  • Associates or Diploma in Nursing Required.
  • Bachelors in Nursing Required within 5 years for GN or RN with less than 1 year of experience.
  • Graduates from a non-accredited school of nursing must have at least one year of acute care experience or at least two years of experience in a licensed health care role and must have successfully passed the NCLEX licensure examination.
  • MI Registered Nurse (RN) Required within 60 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required upon hire from one of the following organizations - American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or Canadian Heart and Stroke.
  • Comply with the MMR, Varicella, Tdap, and Influenza vaccine requirement if in an on-site or hybrid workplace category.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes the framework of the nursing process to provide professional nursing care by incorporating patient-family centered care principles to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and discharge.
  • Provides quality patient care under the direction of the Nurse Leader according to Corewell Health policies and procedures.
  • Recognizes the impact of nursing care and patient/family partnerships on patient outcomes.
  • Partners with and utilizes patient/family input and goals in planning plan of care.
  • Develops teaching strategies for patient/family and documents education and learning appropriately in health record.
  • Completes an assessment and shift documentation according to the Observation documentation policy.
  • May complete 1-4 discharge, transfers, and assessments during a 12 Hour shift.
