The Registered Nurse provides professional nursing care to patients in an assigned unit using the nursing process, coordinates care throughout the hospital, collaborates with the healthcare team to meet patients’ needs, participates in patient education, and directs or assists ancillary personnel. The role requires clinical competence, adaptability, independent work with minimal supervision, and advocacy for patients’ rights, safety, privacy, confidentiality, and best interests. The nurse assesses patients and families, establishes nursing diagnoses and measurable outcomes, develops and evaluates patient-specific interventions and care plans, and works with physicians to identify patient goals. The role includes caring for adult and geriatric patients, administering medications and blood components, documenting care accurately, supporting quality and safety practices, managing equipment and supplies, and maintaining clinical knowledge through required education and competency activities. The nurse works under the responsibility of the charge nurse and may cross-train or float to another area when qualified and requested. Scheduling is based on patient-care needs and may include weekends, holidays, nights, and call. Working every other weekend is a minimum requirement. Shift and call assignments may change with department needs, and staff may be required to work alternate shifts or rotating schedules for limited periods during emergencies.
