The Registered Nurse provides professional nursing care to patients on an assigned unit using the nursing process and coordinates care throughout the hospital. The nurse cooperates with the health care team to meet patients’ needs, participates in patient education, and directs or assists ancillary personnel. The role requires assessing patient and family needs, establishing measurable outcomes, developing and revising patient-specific care plans, collaborating with physicians, and evaluating nursing interventions. The nurse provides appropriate clinical care, responds to emergencies, advocates for patient rights, maintains confidentiality and safety, and adapts to changing workloads while working independently with minimal supervision. The nurse administers and controls medications, narcotics, parenteral medications, and blood components; manages resources and equipment safely; supports quality improvement; and participates in required education, meetings, and annual skills updates. The position also includes orientation and support of staff, cross-training to another unit or area within one year as staffing permits, and floating to areas where the nurse has documented competency when requested. The nurse works under the responsibility of the charge nurse. Scheduling is based on patient-care needs and may include weekends, holidays, nights, and call assignments. Working every other weekend is a minimum requirement, and alternate shifts or rotating schedules may be assigned for limited periods to meet department needs.
