The Big Rapids Campus features a 22-bed medical-surgical unit and a 4-bed critical care unit, offering an ideal environment for new nurses to gain experience and advance their careers. The diverse patient population primarily consists of hospitalist medicine patients with various diagnoses such as pneumonia, COPD, cellulitis, kidney failure, and bowel obstructions. This provides opportunities to develop acute care skills including IV placement, chest tubes, and NG tube management. The critical care unit frequently admits high-acuity patients with conditions like sepsis, hyperglycemia, and respiratory failure, requiring management of medication drips (e.g., insulin, vasopressors) and the use of equipment such as ventilators and BIPAPs. The unit boasts a well-established, collaborative team comprising hospitalists, care managers, social workers, pharmacy, nurse techs, physical therapists, and occupational therapists. A mix of experienced RNs and an education team ensures a supportive onboarding experience for new hires and graduates. Scheduling follows a six-week rotating core, allowing for advance planning to maintain work-life balance.
