The Big Rapids Campus features a 22-bed medical-surgical unit and a 4-bed critical care unit, offering an ideal environment for new nurses to gain experience and advance their careers. The diverse patient population primarily consists of hospitalist medicine patients with various diagnoses such as pneumonia, COPD, cellulitis, kidney failure, and bowel obstructions. This allows for the development of acute care skills including IV placement, chest tube management, and NG tube placement/management. The critical care unit frequently admits high-acuity patients with conditions like sepsis, hyperglycemia, and respiratory failure, requiring management of medication drips (e.g., insulin, vasopressors) and the use of equipment such as ventilators and BIPAPs. The Big Rapids unit boasts a cohesive team that collaborates effectively with an interdisciplinary group including hospitalists, care managers, social workers, pharmacy, nurse technicians, physical therapists, and occupational therapists to ensure quality patient care. A blend of experienced RNs and an education team supports new hires and graduates with a comprehensive onboarding experience. Scheduling is managed through a six-week rotating core, enabling staff to plan appointments in advance and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
