The Big Rapids Campus features a 22-bed medical-surgical unit and a 4-bed critical care unit, offering an ideal environment for new nurses to gain experience and advance their careers. The diverse patient population primarily consists of hospitalist medicine patients with various diagnoses such as pneumonia, COPD, cellulitis, kidney failure, and bowel obstructions. This provides opportunities to develop acute care skills including IV placement, chest tubes, and NG tube management. The critical care unit frequently admits high-acuity patients with conditions like sepsis, hyperglycemia, and respiratory failure, requiring management of medication drips (e.g., insulin, vasopressors) and the use of equipment such as ventilators and BIPAPs. The Big Rapids unit boasts a well-established team that collaborates effectively with an interdisciplinary team, including hospitalists, care managers, social workers, pharmacy, nurse techs, physical therapists, and occupational therapists, to ensure quality patient care. A mix of experienced RNs and an education team support new hires and graduates with a comprehensive onboarding experience. Scheduling is based on a six-week rotating core, allowing for advance planning of appointments and promoting work-life balance. Big Rapids Hospital is recognized by The Leapfrog Group with an ‘A’ in hospital safety and is committed to protecting patients from preventable errors, injuries, and infections.
