About The Position

The 12-bed ICU primarily serves a medical population with a variety of complex medical and pulmonary conditions, co-managed by hospitalists and critical care medicine. It also provides ICU level care for patients from cardiology and surgical service lines, including CRRT and targeted temperature management. As a Registered Nurse (RN), the role involves consistently delivering high-quality care and customer service, demonstrating respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy in each encounter with patients, their families, visitors, and colleagues. RNs are primarily accountable for nursing coordination and individualized care for patients of all ages, utilizing delegation and critical thinking skills in a team-oriented, collaborative approach. The position involves assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care to achieve optimal outcomes, completing age-specific assessments, and developing interdisciplinary plans of care in collaboration with the healthcare team, patient, and family. RNs administer and document treatments and medications accurately using automated computer systems, including electronic medical records, and identify and address patient/family educational needs. The role also contributes to Carilion Clinic’s performance improvement activities, advocates for patients, and applies knowledge of growth and development. RNs are expected to exhibit clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances, plan strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, resource consumption, and improve patient outcomes, and function as a role model for clinical practice. They manage resources, establish priorities, and modify the environment to meet patient care needs, complete predetermined projects, and use problem-solving methods. The role also includes active participation in the orientation of new employees, providing feedback, and contributing to practice, environment, and work issues through participation in unit, hospital, and/or system activities, as well as assisting with education activities.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing or an approved nursing program eligible to sit for the Virginia RN licensure examination.
  • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.
  • AHA BLS-HCP required.
  • May be required to obtain/maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP based on specific work unit.
  • Computer skills required for electronic medical record (EPIC).

Responsibilities

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care in order to achieve optimum patient outcomes for patients of all ages as appropriate to service area.
  • Complete, document and use age specific admission and ongoing assessments to develop a plan of care.
  • Collaborate with members of the health care team/patient/family to develop, implement, and evaluate an age-specific interdisciplinary plan of care.
  • Revise plan according to changes in patient status.
  • Accurately administer and document treatments and medications for patients of all ages utilizing automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
  • Identify patient/family (caregiver) educational needs in a timely manner, incorporate into the plan of care, implement and document appropriately.
  • Contribute to Carilion Clinic’s performance improvement activities.
  • Consistently demonstrate the role of patient advocate, protector of patient’s rights, and provider of psychological/social/cultural support.
  • Apply knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.
  • Determine and perform within clinical, leadership, and/or education pathways to support (direct/indirect) evidenced based, quality patient care service and performance improvement.
  • Exhibit clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances.
  • Plan strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, resource consumption and improve patient outcomes.
  • Function as role model for clinical practice to coworker, students, and physicians.
  • Manage resources, establish priorities, and modify environment to meet patient care needs.
  • Complete manager/director predetermined projects within specified time frame and according to pre-established guidelines.
  • Use problem-solving methods to facilitate resolution to patient and personnel situations that present in the work area.
  • Take an active role in the orientation of new employees.
  • Provide feedback to staff using appropriate communication and documentation.
  • Provide input into practice, environment, and work issues by participating on unit, hospital, and/or system activities which facilitates staff participation/input in decision making.
  • Assist with providing education activities for unit/department.
