RN - Med Surg ICU
About The Position
This is a 12-bed ICU with a primary medical population experiencing a variety of complex medical and pulmonary conditions. Patients are co-managed by hospitalist and critical care medicine. The unit also provides ICU level care for patients from cardiology and surgical service lines, and offers CRRT and targeted temperature management. As a registered nurse (RN), you are expected to consistently deliver the best in care and customer service, demonstrating respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy in every interaction. RNs assume primary accountability for nursing coordination and individualized patient care for patients of all ages, utilizing delegation and critical thinking skills in a team-oriented, collaborative approach.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing or an approved nursing program eligible to sit for the Virginia RN licensure examination.
- Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.
- AHA BLS-HCP required.
- Computer skills required for electronic medical record (EPIC).

- May be required to obtain/maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP based on specific work unit.
Responsibilities
- Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care to achieve optimum patient outcomes for patients of all ages as appropriate to the service area.
- Completes, documents, and uses age-specific admission and ongoing assessments to develop a plan of care.
- Collaborates with the healthcare team, patient, and family to develop, implement, and evaluate an age-specific interdisciplinary plan of care, revising it according to changes in patient status.
- Accurately administers and documents treatments and medications for patients of all ages using automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
- Identifies, incorporates into the plan of care, implements, and documents patient/family (caregiver) educational needs in a timely manner.
- Contributes to Carilion Clinic’s performance improvement activities.
- Consistently demonstrates the role of patient advocate, protector of patient’s rights, and provider of psychological/social/cultural support.
- Applies knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.
- Determines and performs within clinical, leadership, and/or education pathways to support evidenced-based, quality patient care service and performance improvement.
- Exhibits clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances.
- Plans strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, resource consumption, and improve patient outcomes.
- Functions as a role model for clinical practice to coworkers, students, and physicians.
- Manages resources, establishes priorities, and modifies the environment to meet patient care needs.
- Completes manager/director predetermined projects within specified time frames and according to pre-established guidelines.
- Uses problem-solving methods to facilitate resolution to patient and personnel situations that present in the work area.
- Takes an active role in the orientation of new employees.
- Provides feedback to staff using appropriate communication and documentation.
- Provides input into practice, environment, and work issues by participating on unit, hospital, and/or system activities that facilitate staff participation/input in decision making.
- Assists with providing education activities for the unit/department.
