This 12-bed ICU primarily serves patients with a variety of complex medical and pulmonary conditions, co-managed by hospitalist and critical care medicine. The unit also provides ICU-level care for patients from cardiology and surgical service lines, and offers CRRT and targeted temperature management. As a registered nurse (RN), you are expected to consistently deliver the best in care and customer service, demonstrating respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy in every interaction. RNs assume primary accountability for nursing coordination and individualized patient care for all ages, utilizing delegation and critical thinking skills for a collaborative approach. The RN assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care to achieve optimal outcomes. Age-specific assessments are completed and used to develop a plan of care, which is then collaborated on with the healthcare team, patient, and family, and revised as needed. Treatments and medications are accurately administered and documented using automated computer systems, including electronic medical records. Patient and family educational needs are identified, incorporated into the plan of care, implemented, and documented. The RN contributes to Carilion Clinic’s performance improvement activities, acts as a patient advocate, protector of patient rights, and provider of psychological, social, and cultural support. Knowledge of growth and development is applied to patient care. The RN determines and performs within clinical, leadership, and/or education pathways to support evidenced-based, quality patient care and performance improvement. Expertise is demonstrated in rapidly changing circumstances, and strategies are planned to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, resource consumption, and improve patient outcomes. The RN functions as a role model for clinical practice, manages resources, establishes priorities, and modifies the environment to meet patient care needs. Manager/director predetermined projects are completed within specified time frames. Problem-solving methods are used to resolve patient and personnel situations. The RN takes an active role in orienting new employees, provides feedback to staff, and contributes to practice, environment, and work issue discussions through participation in unit, hospital, and/or system activities. Education activities for the unit/department are assisted with.
