The Gerber OB unit is a private-room, mother–baby centered unit providing care across labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum. The unit includes 7 private patient rooms, a 3-bed triage area, a short-term observation room, and a dedicated surgical suite for C-sections. Nurses care for one laboring patient at a time, transitioning to one nurse for every two mother-baby couplets postpartum. Triage is typically staffed by one to two nurses. The unit supports day and night shifts and offers a collaborative environment focused on safe, individualized care for mothers and babies. Gerber Hospital has been keeping the community healthy and providing exceptional experiences for more than 100 years, offering access to experienced doctors, advanced technology, and programs that improve well-being. The scope of work involves delivering nursing care responsibly and accountably as described professionally by the American Nurses Association (ANA) and legally by the State of Michigan. This includes demonstrating competency through the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation) and upholding the standards of professional performance (ethical practice, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice and research, quality of practice, professional practice evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health) to achieve optimal outcomes.
