Our client, a well-established healthcare organization, is seeking an experienced Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse to join their obstetrics team in Silver Spring, Maryland. This is an onsite, 90-day contract engagement supporting a busy birthing unit where clinical judgment, calm under pressure, and genuine compassion matter every single shift. Requirements

  • Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse license valid in the state of Maryland (or a multistate compact license covering Maryland practice).
  • Prior labor and delivery experience in a hospital setting.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Current NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification.
  • Demonstrated competency in electronic fetal monitoring interpretation.
  • Strong assessment and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to remain composed and decisive during obstetric emergencies.
  • Comfortable working full shifts onsite.
  • Proficiency in documenting in an electronic health record system.
  • Clear communication skills with patients, families, and interdisciplinary colleagues.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States for the duration of the engagement.

Nice To Haves

  • ACLS certification.
  • AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring credentialing.
  • Experience in a high-volume or higher-acuity birthing center.
  • Exposure to high-risk obstetric populations.
  • Prior contract or travel nursing experience.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Experience precepting newer nurses.
  • Additional competencies in postpartum, triage, or newborn nursery care.
  • Familiarity with Epic or a comparable electronic health record.
  • Comfort with a rotating or night shift schedule.
  • Flexibility across labor, recovery, and postpartum assignments.
  • Experience supporting patients with diverse cultural expectations around birth.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct nursing care to patients through all stages of labor, delivery, and immediate postpartum recovery.
  • Perform admission assessments, ongoing physical and emotional evaluations, and develop/execute individualized plans of care in coordination with the attending physician and care team.
  • Utilize continuous electronic fetal monitoring, interpret fetal heart rate tracings, recognize category changes and non-reassuring patterns, escalate findings, and intervene according to protocols.
  • Manage labor augmentation and induction protocols, administer medications safely, and support patients through medicated and unmedicated births.
  • Assist with vaginal deliveries and provide circulating or scrub support for cesarean sections.
  • Perform immediate newborn care including assessment, stabilization, thermoregulation, identification procedures, and facilitating early skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding initiation.
  • Accurately and timely document in the electronic health record for every encounter.
  • Educate patients and families on labor progression, pain management options, postpartum recovery, and newborn care.
  • Contribute to a respectful unit culture through clear communication with physicians, midwives, anesthesia staff, and nursing colleagues.
  • Participate in obstetric emergency response, including postpartum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, cord prolapse, and emergent cesarean situations.
  • Support triage of patients presenting to the unit, performing initial assessment, determining acuity, and communicating findings to the provider for admission or discharge decisions.
