Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States, is dedicated to transforming the health care experience and providing access to world-class health care in America’s heartland. This is a busy 40-bed Level IV NICU that includes a dedicated micropreemie unit for infants born at very early gestational ages. The conditions of the infants can include prematurity, sepsis, respiratory distress, surgical emergencies, birth-related trauma and other medical conditions. Sanford Children’s NICU offers an advanced level of equipment and capabilities not found at every NICU, including synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation, sophisticated pulmonary functioning testing, high frequency ventilation, nitric oxide therapy, and whole-body cooling. The air/ground flight team that functions out of NICU brings in approximately 30% of the infants admitted to the NICU. The staff includes Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, Neonatologists, RNs, Patient Care Techs & Formula Technicians. Our specially trained flight nurses, APPs and Respiratory Therapists provide transport services from North Dakota, northern South Dakota, and western Minnesota. Respiratory therapists always staff the NICU, providing respiratory care and direct patient care. Neonatal Nurse Practitioners are on site 24/7. The Nurse - Patient Ratio is 1:1-3 on all shifts. The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for utilizing the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, outcomes/planning, implementation and evaluation) to provide individualized nursing care to patients. The RN collaborates with other inter-professional colleagues, including physicians, to plan, implement and evaluate care. They demonstrate competency and practice within the full scope of nursing expertise/knowledge and utilize appropriate age and population specific standards as designated in their assigned clinical setting. The RN cares for patients in all phases of preventative care, health maintenance, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up as patients move along the continuum of care. They are responsible for the planning and coordination of care, patient assessment, patient education, triage, and various other nursing interventions. The RN functions within the scope and standards of nursing practice as outlined in the Nurse Practice Act and Administrative Rules in the state of practice and licensure. The Sanford Professional Nursing Practice recognizes the Scope and Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements as published by the American Nurses Association as the foundation of nursing care delivery and professional conduct.
