About The Position

Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation is a nationally recognized leader in inpatient rehabilitation, providing hospital-level care for patients with complex medical and neurological needs. The organization is currently hiring Registered Nurses (RNs) for its Inpatient Acute Care Units, which include Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), Medically Complex (Cardiac/Oncology), Pediatrics Unit, Intensive Medical Rehab Unit (Critical Care), and 6th Floor Ortho Trauma/Amputee Unit. These units offer intensive rehabilitation and hospital-level nursing care, allowing RNs to manage high-acuity patients, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and significantly impact patient recovery and independence. Registered Nurses are integral members of the multi-disciplinary team, collaborating to deliver patient-centered care. Within the Nursing Department, RNs coordinate, direct, delegate, and provide care to multiple patients. Utilizing a patient and family-centered care approach, RNs build relationships with patients, families, and colleagues to enhance care quality. Nursing care is delivered with compassion and courtesy, adhering to departmental policies and service standards. Patient and family education is a core focus of rehabilitation nursing, crucial for helping patients achieve independence, apply adaptation strategies, and return home.

Requirements

  • Registered nurse in the state of Michigan.
  • Associate's degree in nursing is required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Strong critical thinking, decision-making, delegation, and leadership skills.
  • Time management and organizational skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under time requirements and deadlines.
  • Ability to problem-solve when facing unexpected issues.
  • Ability to handle interruptions.
  • Ability to prioritize effectively.
  • Competent with computer systems for the purpose of documenting patient care.
  • Required to become a Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN) by their 3rd anniversary with Mary Free Bed.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
  • Certification as a Registered Rehabilitation Nurse (CRRN).
  • Previous experience as a RN, especially in a rehabilitation or acute care setting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of their license, certification or registration and as required by law and regulation.
  • Responsible for all nursing care provided to patients at Mary Free Bed.
  • Develop and/or follow a patient-centered plan of care through careful assessment, interdisciplinary collaboration, and critical thinking, aligning with physician and other discipline plans.
  • Coordinate care for non-licensed staff through delegation and follow-up, ensuring adherence to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Participate in performance improvement by identifying ways to improve care, reporting unexpected events or medical errors, and reporting “near misses”.
  • Participate in data collection and documentation audits to assist the Nursing Department with quality improvement measures.
  • Promote safety for all patients served by following all applicable department policies and procedures.
  • Understand and contribute to initiatives in place to improve patient safety.
  • Identify and report unexpected events and near misses without fear of reprisal or retaliation.
  • Communicate identified threats to patient safety or opportunities for improvement to a member of the Nursing Leadership Team in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service standards and behaviors while interacting with patients, family members, physicians, and colleagues.
  • Deal discreetly and sensitively with confidential information.
  • Perform customer service recovery with patients and families’ members as needed.
  • Recognize unique cultural and religious needs of patients and families and integrate these diverse needs into a patient-specific plan of care.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with admitting and consulting physicians.
  • Develop and maintain professional working relationships with colleagues from other disciplines involved in patient and family care.
  • Perform within the policies, procedures, and standards of care set by the organization.
  • Demonstrate competency in areas required by the department within the defined time frame.

  • Assist with employee selection and the orientation process for new team members as requested by Nursing Leadership Team.
  • As a preceptor, collaborate with the Clinical Care Coordinator and Nurse Educator to provide a comprehensive orientation for new team members.
  • Ensure the Nursing Care Assistant assigned to the RN, and who is serving as a preceptor, provides a thorough and accurate orientation for the new team member.
  • As assigned, collaborate with colleagues, the Clinical Care Coordinator and Nurse Educator to provide a valuable clinical rotation for RN students.
  • Follow departmental policies and procedures related to payroll practices, patient chargeable items, and other opportunities to provide high-value nursing care at a reasonable price.
  • Share identified opportunities for cost savings and efficiency with the appropriate Nursing Leadership Team member.
  • Consistently promote teamwork and direct communication with co-workers.
  • Contribute to quality improvement by identifying problems and seeking solutions.
  • Promote patient/family satisfaction where possible; participate in departmental efforts to monitor and report customer service.
